Babylon, Integer Overflow, CVE-2025-XXXX (High)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

The vulnerability occurs in Babylon’s `cumulative_reward_ratio` calculation within the `x/epoching` module. When an attacker mints excessive tokens via IBC transfer and deposits them into the validator rewards pool using DepositValidatorRewardsPool, an integer overflow triggers during reward distribution. This overflow causes a runtime panic in the `EndBlocker` function, halting the chain due to an unhandled arithmetic exception. The flaw stems from insufficient bounds checking in reward accumulation logic, allowing malicious validators or users to disrupt network consensus.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Babylon Blockchain
Version: Pre-patch releases
Vulnerability: Integer Overflow
Severity: High
Date: May 15, 2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploit Analysis:

  1. Token Minting: Attacker exploits IBC to mint large token quantities.
    babylond tx ibc-transfer transfer --packet-timeout-height 0-1000000 --amount 1000000000000000000stake

  2. Reward Pool Deposit: Funds are dumped into the validator pool.
    babylond tx epoching deposit-rewards 1000000000000000000stake --from attacker

3. Trigger Overflow: `EndBlocker` fails during epoch transition.

Mitigation Commands:

1. Patch Upgrade: Apply fixed version.

git clone https://github.com/babylonlabs-io/babylon && cd babylon && git checkout vX.Y.Z-patch

2. Bounds Check: Add arithmetic safeguards in `x/epoching/keeper/rewards.go`:

if cumulativeRewardRatio > math.MaxInt64 / newTokens {
return ErrIntegerOverflow
}

Debugging:

  • Log Inspection:
    journalctl -u babylond -f | grep "panic"

  • Testnet Simulation:
    babylond testnet --v 1 --output-dir ./testnet --chain-id exploit-test
