How the Mentioned Issue Works
An attacker with access to the application’s runtime environment can manipulate the ‘region’ parameter passed to the AWS SDK. By setting this parameter to a specially crafted, invalid value, they can interfere with the SDK’s endpoint resolution logic. This can cause the application’s AWS API calls to be misrouted to servers that are not part of AWS infrastructure, such as internal or non-existent hosts. While the SDK itself is not technically vulnerable, improper handling of this untrusted input by the application can lead to loss of data integrity or availability if calls are sent to unintended destinations.

Check if your project uses the impacted SDK version
npm list aws-sdk
Example of a vulnerable code pattern
const AWS = require('aws-sdk');
// Region set from an unvalidated external source (e.g., env variable)
AWS.config.update({region: process.env.USER_REGION});
How Exploit
An attacker with access to the host environment (e.g., through application flaws or compromised dependencies) sets an invalid region string. This malicious value, like a URL or internal server name, is passed to the SDK configuration. The SDK uses this value to construct the endpoint for API calls. Consequently, sensitive application data intended for AWS services may be transmitted to a server controlled by the attacker.
Protection from this Issue
Migrate to AWS SDK for JavaScript v3, which contains enhanced safety checks. Implement strict input validation and sanitization for all configuration parameters, especially those sourced from environment variables or user input. Follow the AWS shared responsibility model by applying security best practices for application configuration and IAM roles.
Impact
Improper API call routing, potential data disclosure to non-AWS hosts, low operational impact.
