How the CVE Works
This vulnerability exploits weak authentication tags in session cookies when using Auth0’s Symfony SDK with CookieStore. Attackers can brute-force these tags due to insufficient cryptographic validation, allowing session hijacking. The flaw stems from improper handling of cookie encryption in versions <=5.3.1, where the Auth0-PHP SDK (8.0.0-BETA1 to <8.14.0) fails to enforce secure tag generation. Successful exploitation grants unauthorized access without valid credentials.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Auth0 Symfony SDK
Version: <=5.3.1
Vulnerability: Authentication Bypass
Severity: Critical
Date: 2023-XX-XX
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation:
1. Brute-Force Attack:
hydra -l <target> -P <wordlist> -s <port> http-post-form "/login:csrf=^USER^&auth=^PASS^:Invalid"
Attackers target weak cookie tags via predictable values.
2. Session Hijacking:
import requests
malformed_cookie = "malformed_tag=bruteforced_value"
response = requests.get("https://target.com/dashboard", cookies=malformed_cookie)
Protection:
1. Upgrade SDK:
composer require auth0/symfony:5.4.0
2. Key Rotation:
// Symfony config/packages/auth0.yaml auth0: cookie_secret: "%env(ROTATED_AUTH0_SECRET)%"
3. Rate Limiting:
config/packages/security.yaml security: rate_limiter: auth0_cookie_bruteforce: policy: 'fixed_window' limit: 5 interval: '1 minute'
4. Log Monitoring:
tail -f /var/log/symfony/prod.log | grep "Invalid cookie tag"
5. Patch Validation:
php bin/console security:check | grep "CVE-2023-XXX"
