How the mentioned CVE works:
The CVE-2025-22033 vulnerability exists within the bulk user import functionality of the Auth0-PHP SDK. The affected endpoint fails to properly validate the `filepath` parameter provided by users. This lack of validation allows an attacker to supply arbitrary PHP stream wrappers, such as php://filter, instead of a legitimate local file path. When the SDK processes this malicious input, it can be tricked into performing local file inclusion or reading local files from the server’s filesystem. The `php://filter/convert.base64-encode/resource=` wrapper is particularly dangerous as it can be used to exfiltrate the base64-encoded contents of sensitive files, like application configuration files containing database credentials or API keys, without executing PHP code. This attack exploits the SDK’s trust in the user-supplied file path and its direct use in file operations.
Platform: Auth0-PHP SDK
Version: < 8.17.0
Vulnerability : Improper Input Validation
Severity: Low
date: 2025-10-01
Prediction: 2025-10-15
What Undercode Say:
curl -X POST 'https://example.com/bulk-import' -d 'filepath=php://filter/convert.base64-encode/resource=/etc/passwd'
// Malicious payload example $maliciousFilePath = "php://filter/convert.base64-encode/resource=config/database.php";
How Exploit:
Attacker sends a crafted request with a PHP wrapper as the file path. The server processes the wrapper, reading and returning the base64-encoded content of a local file specified in the resource.
Protection from this CVE
Upgrade to version 8.17.0. Implement strict allow-list validation for user-supplied file paths, rejecting any input containing URI schemas or wrappers. Restrict file operations to a specific, predefined directory.
Impact:
Local File Read. Information Disclosure. Sensitive Data Exposure.
