The vulnerability is an XML External Entity (XXE) attack in the Apache Syncope Console. It occurs when an administrator with enments to create or edit Keymaster parameters submits malicious XML data. The Console processes XML input without properly restricting external entity references. This allows the attacker to define external entities that point to sensitive files on the server. When the XML is parsed, these entities are resolved, leading to unauthorized file reads. The attack exploits the Keymaster parameters feature, which uses XML configuration. By injecting a DOCTYPE declaration with SYSTEM entities, the attacker can read local files. For example, referencing /etc/passwd exfiltrates user data. The vulnerability stems from improper input validation and insecure XML parser settings. It affects versions 3.0.0 to 3.0.15 and 4.0.0 to 4.0.3. The patched versions disable external entity resolution or sanitize input. This XXE flaw can lead to sensitive data leakage, compromising server integrity. Attackers must have admin privileges, limiting scope but posing insider threats. The fix involves updating XML libraries or implementing secure parsing. Network access is not required; exploitation is via the web interface. The vulnerability is moderate due to required privileges and data impact.
