Apache StreamPipes, Improper Privilege Management, Moderate Severity

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability in Apache StreamPipes involves improper privilege management within the user ID creation mechanism, allowing non-administrator users to escalate privileges by swapping usernames with administrators. This flaw exists due to insufficient validation during user account modifications, particularly when handling JWT (JSON Web Token) tokens for authentication. JWT tokens contain claims such as username and roles, which are used to authorize user actions. However, the application fails to properly verify these claims against server-side user records, enabling token manipulation. Attackers can craft malicious JWT tokens by altering the username claim to match an administrator’s username, often by tampering with the token payload without invalidating the signature. This is possible because the token validation logic may accept weakly signed or unsigned tokens, or lack robust signature checks. The exploitation typically targets user management endpoints, such as those for updating user profiles, where the system does not enforce privilege checks for username changes. By sending a forged HTTP request with a modified JWT token in the Authorization header, an attacker can trigger the username swap. For example, a request to an API endpoint like PUT /api/v1/users/{id} with a payload containing the admin username can be processed, granting the attacker administrative access. This vulnerability stems from missing authorization controls in versions 0.69.0 to 0.97.0, allowing unauthorized privilege escalation. Once admin privileges are obtained, attackers can tamper with data, access sensitive information, modify system configurations, or create new privileged accounts. The issue is rooted in the user management module’s failure to validate user permissions during username updates, combined with insecure JWT handling. The fix in version 0.98.0 addresses this by implementing strict privilege verification and securing token validation processes.
Platform: Apache StreamPipes
Version: 0.69.0-0.97.0
Vulnerability: Improper Privilege Management
Severity: Moderate
date: 2026-01-01

Prediction: Patched in 0.98.0 on 2026-01-02

What Undercode Say:

Decode JWT token to inspect claims

echo -n ‘eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJ1c2VybmFtZSI6ImFkbWluIn0.’ | base64 –decode

Craft malicious request for username swap

curl -X PUT -H “Authorization: Bearer ” -H “Content-Type: application/json” -d ‘{“username”:”admin”}’ http://localhost:8090/api/v1/users/123

Check Apache StreamPipes version

curl -s http://localhost:8090/actuator/info | grep -o ‘”version”:”[^”]”‘

How Exploit:

Obtain non-admin account JWT token, modify username claim to admin, send forged request to user update endpoint, gain administrative access.

Protection from this CVE:

Upgrade to version 0.98.0, enforce strict JWT validation, implement role-based access controls, audit user management APIs.

Impact:

Privilege escalation, data tampering, unauthorized access, system compromise.
