How the CVE works:
The CVE-2025-54057 vulnerability exists in Apache SkyWalking versions 10.2.0 and earlier due to insufficient sanitization of user input in web pages. This allows attackers to inject malicious HTML or JavaScript tags that are not neutralized before rendering. When user-supplied data containing script tags is reflected in the application’s output without proper encoding, it leads to stored or reflected cross-site scripting (XSS). For example, an attacker could submit a payload like through input fields or URL parameters that are displayed on web pages. The SkyWalking web UI then executes this script in the victim’s browser when the page is loaded. This execution occurs because the application treats user input as HTML rather than plain text, bypassing basic security controls. The vulnerability is classified as “Basic XSS” as it involves direct injection without complex obfuscation. Exploitation can occur via crafted links or forms that trigger script execution upon page visit. Since SkyWalking is used for monitoring, compromised pages could steal session cookies, redirect users, or perform actions under the user’s identity. The issue stems from missing output encoding functions in certain UI components. Apache addressed this in version 10.3.0 by implementing robust input validation and output encoding mechanisms. The fix ensures all user-generated content is escaped before being included in HTML responses, preventing script execution. This vulnerability highlights the importance of context-aware escaping in web applications to mitigate XSS risks.
