Apache Log4j, Remote Code Execution, CVE-2021-44228 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3090

Listen to this Post

Apache Log4j CVE-2021-44228 is a critical zero-day vulnerability affecting Java-based logging frameworks.
The vulnerability resides in Log4j’s message lookup substitution parser, which evaluates embedded expressions.
When applications log untrusted user input containing specific patterns, Log4j interprets them dynamically.
Attackers leverage this behavior by supplying malicious strings containing JNDI lookup URIs.
A typical injection payload triggers a request to an external server via protocols like LDAP or RMI.
The target application parses the string and initiates a network connection to the specified address.
Upon connection, the malicious server responds with a reference pointing to an external Java class.
Log4j downloads and loads this class file directly into the Java Virtual Machine runtime memory.
Once loaded, the deserialized payload executes arbitrary code under the service account privileges.
This grants complete system compromise without requiring any prior authentication credentials.
Log4j is globally integrated into enterprise software, web servers, and cloud infrastructure platforms.
Attack vectors frequently target HTTP headers, user authentication forms, and application logs.
Automated exploitation tools rapidly scanned global endpoints following public disclosure in December 2021.
Remediation involves upgrading dependencies or disabling message lookups across affected configurations.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Apache Log4j
Version: Under Version 2.15
Vulnerability : Remote Code Execution
Severity: Critical Severity
date: December 2021

Prediction: December 2021

What Undercode Say

Check vulnerable log4j dependency versions in Maven project
mvn dependency:tree | grep log4j
Search for vulnerable log4j jar files on Linux filesystem
find / -name "log4j-core-.jar"
Test for JNDI injection via curl user-agent header
curl -H 'X-Api-Version: ${jndi:ldap://127.0.0.1/a}' http://target-server/

How Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

An attacker sends an HTTP request containing a crafted JNDI string inside an application header.
The logging framework evaluates the input string and processes the embedded LDAP lookup command.
The server reaches out to an external attacker-controlled directory server over network ports.
The malicious directory server returns a payload reference containing arbitrary Java bytecode instructions.
The application downloads the class file, executes the code, and grants shell access to the attacker.

Protection: from this CVE

Upgrade the Apache Log4j library package to version 2.15.0 or higher immediately.
If upgrading is impossible, set the property `log4j2.formatMsgNoLookups` to true.
Remove the `JndiLookup` class file directly from the classpath JAR archives as a temporary workaround.
Implement strict egress network filtering to block unauthorized outbound LDAP and RMI connections.

Impact:

Full remote code execution compromise of backend servers and cloud infrastructure components.
Potential deployment of ransomware, cryptominers, and persistent backdoors by threat actors.
Massive data exfiltration and complete confidentiality breach across enterprise applications.
