Apache IoTDB, Deserialization of Untrusted Data, CVE-2025-XXXXX (High)

Listen to this Post

This vulnerability, CVE-2025-XXXXX, exists in Apache IoTDB’s RPC framework due to insecure deserialization of user-supplied data. Attackers can exploit this by sending a maliciously crafted serialized object to the vulnerable IoTDB instance. When this object is deserialized, it triggers the execution of arbitrary code within the context of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) running the IoTDB server. The flaw typically arises because the deserialization process does not sufficiently validate or restrict the classes that can be instantiated. This allows an attacker to leverage a gadget chain—a sequence of library classes available in the application’s classpath—to achieve remote code execution. The attack can be performed remotely without authentication, compromising the entire server and potentially the underlying system.
Platform: Apache IoTDB
Version: 1.0.0 to 2.0.4

Vulnerability : Deserialization of Untrusted Data

Severity: High

date: 2024-09-24

Prediction: Patch expected 2024-09-27

What Undercode Say:

nmap -p 6667 <iotdb_host>
// Malicious payload generation concept
ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(maliciousSocket.getInputStream());
ois.readObject(); // Triggers deserialization

How Exploit:

Attackers send a serialized Java object containing a malicious gadget chain via the RPC port (e.g., 6667). Upon deserialization, the payload executes, granting remote code execution.

Protection from this CVE:

Upgrade to version 2.0.5 immediately. If upgrade is delayed, restrict network access to the IoTDB RPC port and implement network segmentation.

Impact:

Remote Code Execution leading to full compromise of the IoTDB server and underlying host.
