Android, Out of Bounds Read, CVE-2025-48596 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The CVE-2025-48596 vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read issue within the appendFrom function of Parcel.cpp in the Android OS. Parcel is a core component of Android’s Binder IPC mechanism, used for marshaling data between processes. The appendFrom function appends data from one Parcel to another. Due to a missing bounds check, when processing crafted data, the function may read beyond the allocated buffer boundaries. This occurs when the source Parcel contains malformed size fields or parameters that trigger incorrect pointer arithmetic. The lack of validation allows reading adjacent memory, potentially disclosing sensitive information like kernel pointers or credentials. An attacker with local access can exploit this via a malicious app that constructs a specially designed Parcel. The exploit requires no user interaction or additional privileges. By exploiting the out-of-bounds read, an attacker can leak critical data to bypass security mechanisms. This memory disclosure could be combined with other vulnerabilities to achieve arbitrary code execution. The flaw stems from insufficient input sanitization in the Parcel data handling logic. The vulnerable code path likely involves integer overflow or incorrect size calculations during data copying. This vulnerability affects the IPC layer, compromising isolation between apps. Successful exploitation leads to local escalation of privilege, potentially granting system or root access. The issue is critical due to the low attack complexity and high impact on confidentiality and integrity. Understanding the Parcel data structure and appendFrom implementation is key to recognizing the exploit. Patches must add proper bounds checks to prevent unauthorized memory access.
