The vulnerability CVE-2025-48580 is a logic error in the `connectInternal` method of the `MediaBrowser.java` component within the Android framework. This method is responsible for managing connections to media browser services. Due to flawed logic, the method fails to properly validate the application’s state and permissions when a connection request is processed while the app is in the background. Specifically, it incorrectly allows the “while in use” permission to be accessed or utilized. This creates a race condition or state mismatch where background applications can perform operations that should require foreground priority or explicit user consent. The flawed code path does not need any additional execution privileges to be triggered. A locally installed application can exploit this condition without requiring any user interaction. By crafting a sequence of connection requests, an attacker can cause the system to grant elevated permissions associated with the media browser service. This leads to a local escalation of privilege from a standard application context to a higher-privileged context. The core issue is an improper authorization check that does not enforce the correct lifecycle state before permitting access to sensitive functionality.
