The CVE-2025-48525 vulnerability resides in the Android OS, specifically within the `DisassociationProcessor.java` file. This component manages the disassociation process for companion devices like wearables. When a device is disassociated, the system should invalidate all related permissions, including notification access. However, the `disassociate` method contains improper input validation, allowing malicious apps to bypass security checks.
During disassociation, the method fails to verify if the calling app retains authorization to read notifications. This flaw occurs because input parameters are not adequately sanitized, leading to a logic error where notification access permissions are not revoked. Consequently, an app previously associated with a companion device can continue reading notifications without proper clearance.
Exploitation involves a malicious app calling the `disassociate` method with crafted inputs that exploit this validation gap. The app triggers the method to maintain its notification access despite disassociation. Since no user interaction or additional privileges are required, the app gains persistent, unauthorized access to notification streams.
This allows the app to read sensitive notifications from other applications, such as messages, emails, or 2FA codes. The vulnerability stems from assuming disassociation always revokes access, but the input validation oversight permits privilege retention. It affects Android versions implementing the DisassociationProcessor, likely Android 10 and above, leading to local escalation of privilege and privacy breaches.
Platform: Android
