AIOHTTP, Denial of Service, Moderate Severity

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability in AIOHTTP allows for denial of service through memory exhaustion when handling large payloads. It specifically affects servers that use the `Request.post()` method within request handlers. When a POST request with an excessively large body is received, the server attempts to read the entire payload into memory without proper size limits. This leads to uncontrolled memory allocation as the server processes the request. An attacker can craft such a request with a payload large enough to consume available system memory. The memory exhaustion causes the server process to freeze or become unresponsive, denying service to legitimate clients. The issue stems from inadequate payload size validation during the data parsing phase in the `post()` method. The patch introduces checks to limit memory usage during payload processing, preventing this exploitation.
Platform: AIOHTTP
Version: Unspecified
Vulnerability: Large payload DoS
Severity: Moderate
Date: 2026-01-05

Prediction: Patched 2026-01-05

What Undercode Say:

Analytics

pip show aiohttp
curl -X POST -H "Content-Type: multipart/form-data" --data-binary @large_payload.bin http://target:8080/
from aiohttp import web
async def vulnerable_handler(request):
data = await request.post() Vulnerable call
return web.Response(text="Received")
app = web.Application()
app.router.add_post('/', vulnerable_handler)
web.run_app(app, port=8080)

How Exploit:

Craft POST request with oversized body using tools like curl or custom scripts to trigger memory exhaustion in handlers using request.post().

Protection from this CVE

Apply patch from commit b7dbd35; update AIOHTTP; implement payload size limits in application code.

Impact:

Server memory exhaustion, service freeze, denial of service.
