How the Vulnerability Works:
The Aimeos 2021.10 LTS JSON API endpoint ‘/jsonapi/review’ accepts a ‘sort’ parameter for ordering review data. This parameter is directly concatenated into SQL queries without sanitization or parameterization. Attackers can inject malicious SQL code via crafted GET requests by manipulating the sort value. For instance, appending UNION SELECT statements to the sort parameter allows arbitrary query execution. The vulnerability arises from improper input handling in the database layer, enabling injection of SQL commands. Exploits involve sending requests with sort parameters containing SQL syntax to extract database information. This can reveal table names, column structures, and sensitive data like user credentials. The attack is feasible remotely without authentication in default configurations. Injection occurs due to lack of prepared statements, making the query construction vulnerable. Attackers use techniques like blind SQL injection to enumerate and exfiltrate data gradually. The sort parameter, intended for sorting results, becomes an entry point for database manipulation. This vulnerability can lead to full database compromise, including access to all stored records. Mitigation requires patching the code to implement proper input validation and parameterized queries.
