Adobe Experience Manager, Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), CVE-2025-46986 (Critical)

How CVE-2025-46986 Works

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) versions 6.5.22 and earlier fail to properly sanitize user-supplied input in certain form fields, allowing attackers with low privileges to inject malicious JavaScript payloads. When a victim accesses a compromised page, the stored script executes in their browser session, potentially leading to session hijacking, data theft, or unauthorized actions under the victim’s credentials. The vulnerability arises due to insufficient input validation in the WCM (Web Content Management) component, where crafted HTML/JS persists in the content repository.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Adobe Experience Manager
Version: ≤ 6.5.22
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Critical
Date: 06/13/2025

Prediction: Patch by 07/15/2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploitation:

1. Payload Injection:

<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>

Inserted into vulnerable form fields (e.g., text components, metadata fields).

2. Persistence:

Malicious scripts remain in AEM’s JCR (Java Content Repository) until manually purged.

3. Trigger:

Victims execute payloads upon page load or interaction.

Protection:

1. Input Sanitization:

// OWASP Java HTML Sanitizer
PolicyFactory policy = new HtmlPolicyBuilder().toFactory();
String safeInput = policy.sanitize(userInput);

2. AEM Filter:

Deploy a Sling XSS protection filter:

<filter>
<filter-name>xss</filter-name>
<filter-class>org.apache.sling.xss.impl.XSSFilterImpl</filter-class>
</filter>

3. Mitigation Commands:

  • Update to AEM 6.5.23+ (post-patch).
  • Audit custom components:
    grep -r "unsafe" /path/to/aem/components

4. Curl PoC (for testing):

curl -X POST -d "field=<script>alert(1)</script>" http://aem-server/content/form.html

5. Log Monitoring:

tail -f /var/log/aem/error.log | grep "XSS"

6. Content Policy:

Enforce strict CSP headers:

Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval'

7. Patch Verification:

aemcli --version | grep "6.5.23"
