Active Storage, Command Injection, CVE-2025-24293 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

CVE-2025-24293 exploits Active Storage’s insufficient validation of image transformation methods when using `image_processing` with mini_magick. By default, Active Storage restricts unsafe methods, but the allowed list can be bypassed if user-supplied input is accepted for transformations. Attackers can inject malicious commands via untrusted parameters in methods like blob.variant(params[:t] => params[:v]), leading to arbitrary command execution on the server.

DailyCVE Form

Platform: Ruby on Rails
Version: >= 5.2.0
Vulnerability: Command Injection
Severity: Critical
Date: 2025-02-20

Prediction: Patch by 2025-03-10

What Undercode Say

Check Active Storage version
rails active_storage:install
gem list image_processing
Vulnerable code example
<%= image_tag blob.variant(params[:transform] => params[:value]) %>
Mitigation snippet
VALID_TRANSFORMS = ['resize', 'rotate', 'crop']
raise "Invalid transform" unless VALID_TRANSFORMS.include?(params[:transform])

How Exploit

  • Craft malicious transformation params (e.g., {:t => "exploit", :v => "| rm -rf /"}).
  • Submit via unvalidated image processing endpoints.

Protection from this CVE

  • Upgrade to fixed versions.
