Active Job, Deserialization Vulnerability, CVE-2025-45342 (Moderate)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works: This vulnerability exists within the argument deserialization mechanism of Active Job in Ruby on Rails. When a job is fetched from a queue (e.g., Redis, Sidekiq), its serialized arguments are reconstituted. A flaw allowed a malicious actor to enqueue a job with a crafted String argument. During deserialization, this string could be incorrectly interpreted as a Global ID (gid://). The system would then attempt to automatically locate and instantiate the ActiveRecord object referenced by this forged Global ID. This process constitutes an unsafe deserialization or object injection, as it could lead to the loading of unexpected objects, potentially triggering unexpected code paths or side effects within the application, depending on how the job logic uses the deserialized arguments.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Ruby on Rails
Version: 6.1.0.0+
Vulnerability: Deserialization flaw
Severity: Moderate
Date: 2026-01-16

Prediction: Patched 2026-01-16

What Undercode Say:

Analytics:

grep -r "GlobalID::Locator.locate" app/jobs/
rails stats
bundle audit check --update
cat Gemfile.lock | grep -A2 -B2 "activejob"

How Exploit:

  1. Attacker crafts malicious job payload with string mimicking Global ID.
  2. Payload enqueued to application’s job backend (e.g., ActiveJob::Base.queue_adapter.enqueue).
  3. Worker deserializes argument, treats string as object reference.

4. `GlobalID::Locator.locate` loads unintended record.

Protection from this CVE:

  1. Immediate update to Rails versions >= 7.1.3.5, 7.0.8.5, or 6.1.7.5.

2. Review job logic for unsafe argument usage.

3. Validate job parameters before processing.

4. Use dedicated serializers for complex arguments.

Impact:

Potential unauthorized object access, data leakage, or logic manipulation in applications using Active Job with vulnerable versions.
