How the CVE Works:
The vulnerability in LiteLLM (CVE-2025-XXXX) stems from the unsafe use of Python’s `ast.literal_eval` function to parse user input. This function is designed to evaluate strings containing Python expressions safely, but it can be exploited by malicious actors to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. By sending specially crafted input, an attacker can trigger excessive resource consumption, such as CPU or memory exhaustion, leading to the crashing of the LiteLLM Python server. The issue is particularly severe because it does not require authentication, making it accessible to any unauthenticated user. This vulnerability was identified in commit 26c03c9 of the BerriAI/litellm repository.
