The vulnerability exists in the `ensureBound` method of `RemotePrintService.java` within the Android framework. This method handles binding to remote print services and manages permission states during the binding process. When an app binds to a print service, the system grants foreground permissions based on the app’s activity state. However, due to a logic error in permission validation, when the app transitions to the background, these permissions are not properly revoked. This allows a background application to retain foreground-level permissions indefinitely. The flaw stems from incorrect condition checks in ensureBound, where the system fails to detect the app’s move from foreground to background. A malicious app can initiate a print service binding while in the foreground, gain elevated permissions, and then move to the background while maintaining those permissions. Since no user interaction is required, the app can silently perform privileged operations. This permissions bypass enables local escalation of privilege, allowing access to sensitive data, modification of system settings, or execution of arbitrary code with higher privileges. The vulnerability leverages a core system service, affecting Android versions using the affected print service framework.
